St. Erasmus of Antioch (about 240-303) was an early Christian bishop. Often be ordeal was shown, where it can be winched the intestines from the body. Here, however, the apotheosis of the saint is shown, and on his suffering merely refers the cruel device of the angel with the red cloth - is held - as well as the miter as episcopal insignia. The upward rounded format suggests that this is a draft for an altarpiece, with so far no execution has become known. For a long time, the small painting as a work of an unknown Austrian artist from the second half of the 18th century. Only in 2003 Ján Papco has originating from today's Moravian-Silesian region and later the Vienna Academy compulsory courses Johann Ignaz Cymbal proposed as an author. [G. Lechner, 5/2016]
