Samson the Israelite and the Philistine Delilah are the main characters in this scene from the Bible. Delilah seduced Samson, to find out the secret of his superhuman strength. She discovered that if his hair were cut he would be as weak as any other man. Lievens painted Samson sleeping on Delilah’s lap. She is handing a pair of scissors to an accomplice to cut Samson’s hair.
