Joshua Johnson was the nation’s first professional African American painter of prominence. Listed in the 1816 Baltimore city directory as a “free householder of Colour,” he was born into slavery and freed by his owner (and father) shortly after 1782. Through his ties to abolitionists, Johnson attracted local patrons from the city’s artisan and middle-class families, such as the Banksons. The emphasis on fashion in this painting is characteristic of much of Johnson’s portraiture. When permitted, the artist preferred to bedeck his female sitters with jewelry. Mrs. Bankson’s hair is bound with a double circlet of light glass beads that accentuates her brown hair and gray eyes. The child’s clothes are equally elegant; he sports a high-waisted, white-muslin gown and holds a brightly colored strawberry, a delicacy that Johnson often included in his portraits.

Choose your desired art print material
For every art print we offer a range of different materials and sizes. Choose among the following product options now to match your preferences in size and material:
- Poster print (canvas material): Our poster is a printed flat canvas with a granular texture on the surface, that reminds the original work of art. It is perfectly suited for putting your art print using a customized frame. Please bear in mind, that depending on the size of the poster we add a white margin of something between 2-6cm round about the painting to facilitate the framing with your custom frame.
- Aluminium dibond print: Aluminium Dibond prints are metal prints with an outstanding depth effect, which creates a modern impression throuch a surface structure, which is not reflective. For the Direct Print On Aluminum Dibond, we print your artwork onto the aluminium white-primed surface. The bright & white sections of the original artpiece shimmer with a silky gloss, however without glare.
- The canvas print: A canvas direct print is a printed canvas stretched on a wooden stretcher. Canvas Prints have the great advantage of being low in weight, meaning that it is easy to hang your Canvas print without the support of extra wall-mounts. Because of thatcanvas prints are suitable for all kinds of walls.
- Acrylic glass print (with real glass coating): An acrylic glass print, often referenced as a an art print on plexiglass, will change the original artwork into home décor. Beyond that, it makes a viable alternative to dibond and canvas fine art prints. Your favorite work of art is custom-made with state-of-the-art UV printing technology. This has the effect of vivid, impressive colors. The great upside of a plexiglass fine art copy is that contrasts plus minor color details will be more visible thanks to the precise gradation of the picture.
