Portrait of Victor Hugo seated in an armchair, standing in front of his son Victor (who will in 1849 the name of François-Victor).
A Pons Gaspard letter to Victor Hugo (? 1836) evokes the portrait and that of "Leopoldina the Book of Hours" whose execution had to be close, "Victorine just show me your portrait; I found it very similar, and what's more, Toto too. Didine is a little less, but not surprising. Who knows how difficult it is to capture young women's likeness, and more so for young girls, especially when they are still children? This only proves that boys are easier to represent on the canvas than their sisters. I thought of all, the first word they had told me, that was the old Mr. Chatillon was the author of these portraits, but I hear that he is a young painter, and although ignoramus paint, I make my sincere compliment him. "This double portrait is a precious and rare document on the apartment in the Place Royale (Place des Vosges): heavy drapes evoke all accounts, items that can be traced in the catalog of the sale of furniture, in 1852, caused by exile: large oak chair covered with tapestry, large vase with lid Japanese porcelain Imari, set on a black and gold lacquer furniture (a "two furniture corners Japanese lacquer" mentioned in 1852), carpets "Aubusson" or "Soap." The table is presented to the 1836 area and mentioned to the catalog: "CHATILLON (AUGUSTUS DE) 11. r Cadet / 540 - foot portrait e Victor Hugo, with his son..." He was then hung in the living room Place Royale (Place des Vosges). Not having been on sale with furniture, in 1852, he was in the custody of Paul Meurice before joining the poet in exile. Remained at Hauteville House, the portrait was given to the City by the family and, like other family portraits, replaced in the billiard room, a copy of Ms. Venot of the Auteroche.
