Leonardo da Vinci came to France at the invitation of Francis I, died at Amboise in 1519. The episode without fictitious doubt of his death before the king is extracted from the "Lives" of Vasari. Other famous paintings on display at the Louvre served as models to Ingres to represent the characters in the scene. Thus, the face of Francis I is transposed painted profile portrait by Titian in 1539. The figure of Leonardo dying, however, is a creation typical "Ingres."
After his stay in Rome as a pensioner of the Academy of France, Ingres remain in Italy until 1824. He painted this picture for the Count de Blacas, ambassador of Louis XVIII.
