The painting was a gift from the artist to the Emperor Franz Joseph, the Order of Franz Joseph had him awarded in 1870th It was issued in early January 1871 at the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry. Raden Saleh, a Javanese prince, studied painting in the Netherlands. By his descent he enjoyed access to the highest European nobility, where he was a colorful character highly appreciated. He is now considered as the most important painter of Indonesia.
