In 1778, Louis-Philippe d'Orléans, Duke of Chartres and future Philippe Egalité, purchased a large tract of land in the town of Monceau. He made the turn into picturesque garden after the drawings of Carmontelle, a writer and landscape architect, his drive and the authorizing of its celebrations. The park, called Folie de Chartres, contained many factories: Greek temple, Chinese pagoda, Tartar tent, Dutch windmills, pyramids, obelisks, Venetian bridge naumachia etc. La Folie de Chartres was amputated north in 1787, when construction of the wall of the Farmers General. Confiscated during the Revolution, she was assigned by the Convention to various public institutions that exploited games and entertainment. Rendering the Duke of Orleans under the Restoration, the garden became property of the City in 1852; he was a few years later amputated half of its area by a housing estate, the remainder being converted into a public garden by Alphand.
