Endymion is a beautiful shepherd who was mistress Selene, goddess of the moon. She asked Zeus to plunge his beloved into an eternal sleep to preserve its beauty. It rests in a cave since Carian and Selene just watching him sleep all crescent moon nights. The sported his forehead has often led to confusion with the goddess Diana. But it is Selene in question here. The cave was however replaced by a forest, that love has joined via a cloud. The artist, also behind the "Mars and Venus" (PPP02574), places his characters in alcoves of nature where privacy is unveiled by a powerful light. One can imagine that these pendants were perhaps part originally of a larger series depicting the loves of the gods.
The table was with her during "Mars and Venus" (PPP02574) in the Paris collection of Charles Vincent Ocampo, in the early twentieth century. In 1931 he donated it, subject to usufruct, to the City of Paris and raised in successive usufruct 1942.Attributions of the work: - French school: attribué- formerly German School: J.Foucart (communication oral 1981) - School of Southwest Germany: Dr. Elfriede Baum (written communication 1982) - German School circa 1770 to 1780 or perhaps Johann Keller (Swiss painter who worked in France): B.Bushart (written communication in 1982 ) - 1770-1800 Austrian School: Blosky (oral communication 1982)
