Købke studied himself very carefully while painting this self-portrait. He did not intend the painting to be a typical portrait of an artist, and the picture has no traces of his tools, working clothes, or studio. Quite the contrary: he is wearing an overcoat, and the background is entirely neutral so that you have no sense that he is in the middle of a working situation.
The self-portrait is not conducive to the Romantic worship of artists and genius so prevalent at the time. Subdued or dark nuances are used throughout the entire picture, lit up only by Købke’s face. Thus, all attention is focused on him.
The self-portrait of a great Danish artist During his day, Købke was known as a straightforward, good-natured and simple-minded person who did not strive to attract attention to himself. His self-portrait supports this description. Only the insistent gaze suggests that the picture shows one of the greatest Danish artists of all time.
Sense of observation and colour Købke’s keen sense of observation and sense of colour had no equal among the other Danish artists of the era. Købke painted his self-portrait around the time where he truly found his own voice as an artist. He never did, however, obtain a prominent position within the Danish art scene during his own lifetime. His art did not win true recognition until 30-40 years after his death.

Pick your product material
In the dropdown selection right next to the product you can pick your favorite material and size. In order match your personal requirements perfectly, you can choose among the following product customization options:
- The canvas print: A UV printed canvas applied on a wood frame. It generates a typical effect of three dimensionality. A canvas of your favorite artpiece will allow you to transform your individual art print into a large size collection piece like you know from galleries. Canvas prints are relatively low in weight, meaning that it is quite simple to hang up the Canvas print without the use of any wall-mounts. Canvas prints are suited for any kind of wall.
- Aluminium dibond (metal print): These are metal prints on aluminium dibond material with an impressive depth - for a modern impression and a non-reflective surface. The colors are luminous and vivid in the highest definition, the fine details appear very clear, and the print has a a matte appearance that you can literally feel.
- Printed poster (canvas material): A poster print is a UV printed canvas with a fine structure on the surface. Please note, that depending on the absolute size of the poster print we add a white margin of around 2-6cm around the print motif, which facilitates the framing with your custom frame.
- Printed acrylic glass with a glossy effect: An acrylic glass print, often referenced as a fine art print on plexiglass, makes your favorite original work of art into beautiful wall décor and makes a great alternative to dibond or canvas prints. The artwork is being custom-made with the help of modern UV printing technology. The great advantage of a plexiglass fine art print is that contrasts plus small color details become more identifiable due to the granular tonal gradation. The acrylic glass protects your custom fine art print against light and heat for decades.
