Gallery label: This likeness of French officer Laurent Bernard Poole is one of the earliest examples of Neo-Impressionist portraiture. The artist was his friend and fellow soldier--a self-taught painter who created only a few works in the style before dying prematurely of smallpox. Dubois-Pillet lavished great detail on Poole's facial features, rigid posture and impeccable uniform. He wears the cross of the Legion of Honor. Poole's receipt of the award in 1886 may have been the impetus for the portrait. The background is a Caucasian prayer rug from the artist's studio. Its intricate pattern presents a challenging use of the dotted brushwork of Neo-Impressionism.
