It was during a stay in the Netherlands as Jean-Marc Nattier has perfected his technique of portraiture. Cut at the bust, face three quarters, his male models sometimes gaze directed into the distance, and very many will wear a colored garment rouge.L'originalité portrait of "Mr. Sarasin" lies precisely in this red coat with angular folds. It gives volume to the body and is referring to a discrete "Bust of Louis XIV" by Bernini (Versailles, Musée National du Château) .We do not know the social status of this Mr. Sarasin, but one can imagine that it was great aristocrat or bourgeois, as the majority of customers Nattier.

The picture remained in the collections of the family model. It thus appeared in Judge Bauer in Hanau, husband of a lady of the Sarasin family. This is directly from the judge that the merchant Seligmann acquired the painting. On 21 November 1903 he sold it to Charles Vincent Ocampo, priced at 35 000frs.En 1931 C.-V. Ocampo donated, subject to usufruct, to the City of Paris, and renounced the usufruct in 1942.
