The painter Jacques-Louis David was closely involved in the late 18th and early 19th century in the political events in France. Already in 1785 completed Oath of the Horatii (Louvre) was recognized a deep revolutionary content, which contributed to the spiritual preparation of the French Revolution. In 1789 he joined the Jacobins and sat apart in his paintings with current events. After the seizure of power who knew Napoleon Bonaparte, the now arrived at a European celebrity painter by orders to be bound, sometimes for propaganda purposes, such as the documentation of the imperial coronation of Napoleon (Louvre 1806/07), but also prove the present painting. The presentation refers to the heavy march by the French army undertook under the direction of Napoleon between 15 and 20 May 1800 on the Great St. Bernard. The over 210 year old work of art was painted by the male artist Jacques Louis David in 1801. The version of the painting was painted with the size: 275 x 232 cm - frame size: 305 x 264 x 14 cm. Oil on canvas was applied by the French painter as the medium of the work of art. The masterpiece has the following inscription: "signed and dated on the Pferdegurt: J. L. DAVID. F. ANNO X. REI. C., and the designation bottom left: BONAPARTE / Annibal [sic] / Karolus Magnus. iMP [ligated]". Besides, this artpiece forms part of the digital collection of Belvedere. Further, the alignment of the digital reproduction is in portrait format and has an aspect ratio of 1 : 1.2, which implies that the length is 20% shorter than the width. Jacques Louis David was a male painter, whose style was primarily Classicism. The French artist was born in 1748 in Paris and passed away at the age of 77 in 1825 in Brussels.
