This square near the Teatro La Fenice is little changed today, except for the loss of the campanile and the church of Sant’Angelo Michele, which were both destroyed in 1837. In it are several carpenters’ or cabinetmakers’ shops, including one at left with planks of wood and a workbench on the pavement outside. Another, with a completed table and various articles of furniture, is to the right of the oratory. Paintings displayed for sale are hung on the wall at the foot of the campanile at the center. The picture is from a series of twenty views that were probably painted for Joseph Smith, British consul in Venice from 1744 to 1760.
