Iconography unusual than St Sebastian wearing armor represented soldier, not martyr riddled with arrows. Sebastian was the captain of the Praetorian Guard of the Emperor Diocletian. The identification of the saint dates only from the twentieth century. It is the representation of St. Sebastian soldier in two manuscripts: the "Grimani Breviary" (Venice, Marciana National Library) and the "Prayer Book of Maximilian of Austria" (Vienna, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek). The artist has taken over almost entirely the figure of Saint Sebastian of "Grimani Breviary" and was placed in front of a Flemish landscape type fifteenth siècle.Or, this picture was not painted in the fifteenth century, but the late nineteenth century. At that time, the Flemish Primitives aroused much interest from collectors and many unscrupulous merchants have flooded the fake art market paintings of this school. According to Didier Martens, the "Saint Sebastian" and "Saint Michael slaying the dragon" (PPP02493) could have been executed by the same forger.

In 1908, the painting was from the merchant F. Kleinberger. Then he figured in the collection of Charles Vincent Ocampo, who donated it subject to usufruct, to the City of Paris in 1931. The usufruct was lifted in 1942.
