The earl and countess of Derby were married in June 1774 and their son, pictured here, was born in April 1775. The picture was probably painted in the following year. It is one of two versions (the other, which is signed, remains with the sitters' descendants). After Lady Derby's death, the earl married Elizabeth Farren, whose celebrated portrait by Lawrence belongs also to the Museum.Lady Derby's costume is vaguely classical while her husband wears fancy dress, a seventeenth-century-style slashed doublet with a lace Van Dyck collar and matching knee britches.

Choose your material variant
We offer a range of various materials and sizes for every product. We allow you to pick your favorite size and material among the following product individualization options:
- The poster print (canvas material): Our poster is a printed sheet of cotton canvas paper with a slightly roughened surface texture. A poster is ideally appropriate for placing the art print with a customized frame. Please keep in mind, that depending on the absolute size of the poster we add a white margin of around 2-6cm round about the print, which facilitates the framing with a custom frame.
- Canvas: A printed canvas stretched on a wooden stretcher frame. In addition to that, a printed canvas produces a lively and comfortable feeling. A canvas print has the advantage of being low in weight, which implies that it is easy to hang up your Canvas print without the help of extra wall-mounts. That is why, a canvas print is suitable for any kind of wall in your home.
- Aluminium dibond (metal print): These are metal prints on aluminium dibond material with a true effect of depth.
- Acrylic glass print (with real glass coating): The print on acrylic glass, which is sometimes described as a UV print on plexiglass, changes your favorite original work of art into décor. The plexiglass with real glass coating protects your chosen fine art print against light and heat for up to 60 years.
