Illustrating the Dormition of the Virgin, this icon shows apostles and celebrants of the liturgical prayer of the Church around the remains of the Virgin. In the center, Christ is surrounded by a mandorla and accompanied by angels. Under his left arm he carries the soul of his mother as a child swaddled. At the top, the sky is open to welcome him. Two buildings are shown in the background.

Celebrated on August 15 in East and West since the sixth century, the Dormition (Koimesis) the incorruptible body conceived without sin is one of the twelve great feasts (dodécaorton) Orthodox liturgical year.
