Vanloo’s subject, a supremely elegant hunting party of the kind enjoyed by Louis XV and his court, derives from Watteau’s fêtes galantes, but teems with contemporary detail, including a black, possibly enslaved, servant dressed in exotic costume. This oil sketch is a study for a picture painted in 1737 for Louis XV's dining room at the Château de Fontainebleau. The finished canvas (Musée du Louvre, Paris) no longer retains the shaped top and bottom that would have originally fit into the dining room’s wood paneling. The verve and freshness of the sketch reflect Vanloo's training and extended activity in Italy.
