Cropped to the waist, this woman is sitting in a Regency-style chair. The powdered hair and rouged complexion, she looks the visitor with assurance.Jusqu'au mid-twentieth century, the painting was attributed to FH Drouais. It is now made to Pierre Allais which recognizes the recurrent formula for the treatment of portraits model sitting in a chair which you can see the folder, turned slightly ¾, an attention to detail and a look fixing the viewer. The detail of the lace sleeve is a piece of great finesse.Le sober and minimalist decor in which the painter has his figures suited to his bourgeois clientele. The format for this table has not been identified, but it is probably a person of the Parisian bourgeoisie.
The "Portrait of a Woman" came from the Fels collection. In 1903, the merchant Charles Sedelmeyer sells to Charles Vincent Ocampo for the sum of 29,000 francs. The latter donated, subject to usufruct in 1931 and left the usufruct in 1942.
