Illustrates the collection of political writings of Victor Hugo, "Acts and Words", part 2, "During the exile," 1867 "I - Crete" where the poet responds to the call of "People Cretan Victor Hugo" sent by J. Zimbrakakis. In his text, dated "Hauteville House, February 17, 1867," it evokes the destruction of the monastery of Arcadion (Arkadi) during the uprising against the Turks, "Crete revolted and she did well. What has produced this revolt? I will say it. Until January 3, four fights, including three wins. Apo corona Vaffé, Castel Selino, and a disaster illustrates Arcadion! the island bisected by the insurgency, half Turkish, half Greek; a line of operations up by Sciffo and Rocoli, Kissamos to Lassiti and even Girapetra. There are six weeks repressed Turks had only a few points along the coast and the western slopes of the mountains where Psiloriti Ambelirsa. In that minute, the raised finger of Europe would have saved Candia. But Europe was not time. There was a wedding party in that moment, and Europe looked at the ball. We know that word, Arcadion, little is known about the fact. Here are the specifics and almost ignored. In Arcadion monastery of Mount Ida, founded by Heraclius, sixteen thousand Turkish attack hundred ninety-seven men and three hundred and forty to three women, more children. The Turks twenty-six guns and two howitzers, the Greeks two hundred and forty guns. The battle lasted two days and two nights; the convent was riddled with bullets twelve hundred; a wall collapses, enter Turkish, Greek continue the fight, one hundred and fifty guns are out of service, it is still struggling six hours in the cells and on the stairs, and there are two thousand corpses in the yard. Finally the last resistance is forced; tingling winners Turkish fills the convent. It remains a barricaded room where the powder magazine, and in this room, near an altar at the center of a group of children and mothers, a man of eighty years, a priest, the 'igoumène Gabriel praying. Outside killing fathers and husbands; but not to be killed, it will be the misery of these women and children, promised two harems. The door, tossed the ax, will cede and fall. The old man takes a candle on the altar, look at these children and women, the candle looks on the powder and saves. A terrible action, explosion, helps them overcome the agony is triumph, and this heroic monastery, who fought as a fortress, dies like a volcano. Psara is not more epic, Missolonghi is no more sublime. "
This gloom is reproduced, engraved in the same direction by Fortune Méaulle in volumme of "Acts and words", "In Exile" of Hugues edition (edition illustrated Victor Hugo. "Published in 1893 (p. 141 ).
