Original artwork information from The Metropolitan Museum of Art (© - by The Metropolitan Museum of Art - The Metropolitan Museum of Art)
The clever balance of verisimilitude and idealization in the features of this pair made Hans Memling the most sought-after portraitist of his day. The Florentine Tommaso Portinari was the branch manager of the Medici bank in Bruges, and probably commissioned these portraits from Memling upon the couple’s marriage in 1470. They originally formed a triptych with a central devotional image of the Virgin and Child. Beyond demonstrating the couple’s piety, Maria’s elaborate necklace and gown display their wealth and social status. Memling places the sitters before illusionistic frames, an innovation suggesting that the figures project into our space.

Select your material
The product dropdown menu gives you the possibility to pick the material and size of your choice. The following options are available for individualization:
- Acrylic glass print (with real glass coating): The acrylic glass print, which is often described as a plexiglass print, transforms your original artwork into brilliant home decoration. Your work of art will be printed with the help of modern UV printing machines. This creates intense, sharp color hues. The great benefit of a plexiglass fine art print is that contrasts plus artwork details become more exposed with the help of the very subtle tonal gradation of the picture. The real glass coating protects your custom art replica against sunlight and external influences for decades.
- Canvas: The canvas print is a printed cotton canvas mounted on a wood stretcher. Canvas prints are relatively low in weight, meaning that it is easy and straightforward to hang up your Canvas print without the use of additional wall-mounts. Canvas prints are suitable for all types of walls.
- Poster print (canvas material): The Artprinta poster print is a UV printed canvas with a slightly rough surface texture. It is excellently suited for putting the art print in a special frame. Please bear in mind, that depending on the absolute size of the canvas poster print we add a white margin of around 2-6cm round about the painting in order to facilitate the framing.
- Aluminium dibond: These are metal prints on aluminium dibond with an outstanding depth effect. The Direct Print on Aluminum Dibond is your excellent start to prints on aluminum. Colors are luminous in the highest definition, fine details appear crisp and clear, and you can literally notice a matte appearance.
