At the Autumn Exhibition in 1889 Edvard Munch was represented with two paintings. One of them bore the title Eve, but later known as Summer and Inger on the beach. The reception was at times very negative. Critics were particularly outraged over use of color and character representation, and it was claimed that the exhibition jury drifted "fun of audience." As an expression of sympathy and a desire to support the young and gifted but controversial artist, acquired Erik Werenskiold painting. In after tomorrow's art history has Sommernatt (Inger on the beach) in many ways stands as the image where Munch Munch - here he takes final leave of the realistic painting, and begin a new phase in his oeuvre.
