Supplemental description by the museum's website (© - The Cleveland Museum of Art - The Cleveland Museum of Art)
The chair, brazier, table, and the setting all show Vien's interest in bringing archaeological accuracy to a new level of precision. Yet his delicate handling and graceful palette derive squarely from 18th-century French painting. The gesture of the melancholic figure, with her head on her hand, has roots going back to the Renaissance. Nonetheless, the painting has a wistful rather than tragic tone. Indeed, images of women in interiors, contemplating a letter with longing or sadness, derive from earlier Dutch paintings of daily life, here transformed into an ancient context.

Pick a art print material variant
For every art print we offer different sizes and materials. We allow you to pick your favorite size and material among the following product individualization options:
- Metal (aluminium dibond print): Aluminium Dibond prints are prints on metal with an impressive effect of depth. The Aluminium Dibond Print is the perfect start to art prints with aluminum. For our Aluminium Dibond print, we print your artwork onto the aluminium composite white-primed surface. The white and bright parts of the original artwork shine with a silky gloss but without glow. Colors are luminous and bright, the details appear very clear.
- Poster (canvas material): The poster print is a printed canvas paper with a fine surface finish, that reminds the original artwork. It is best suited for framing your fine art print with a customized frame. Please bear in mind, that depending on the size of the poster we add a white margin 2-6cm around the work of art, which facilitates the framing.
- Canvas: The canvas direct print is a printed canvas stretched on a wooden frame. Your printed canvas of your favorite work of art will allow you to transform your personal fine art print into a large work of art as you know from art galleries. The advantage of canvas prints is that they are relatively low in weight. That means, it is quite simple to hang up your Canvas print without any wall-mounts. Therefore, a canvas print is suited for all types of walls.
- Print on acrylic glass (with real glass coating): The print on acrylic glass, which is sometimes denoted as a print on plexiglass, will change your favorite original artwork into magnificient décor. Your artwork is being custom-made with modern UV print machines. With a glossy acrylic glass fine art print contrasts plus details become more recognizeable thanks to the fine tonal gradation.
