The presentation is based on a passage in the Old Testament (Genesis 21, 10-14), according to which Abraham the servant Hagar with their son Ishmael out of his house has. On the right edge is Sarah, to see the wife of Abraham as she overheard behind the curtain is happening. The expulsion came at her insistence, because she feared the mother of Isaac, the second son of Abraham to lose their dominant position within the family. Danhauser tried to explain the religious theme through natural reproduction of human behavior. In his opinion, historical subjects were easier to understand if they are illustrated genre-like. Although the artist disagrees with the academic tradition of history painting, he received the Hofpreis for this painting 1836th [Sabine Grabner 8/2009] Literature: Grabner, Sabine: The painter Josef Danhauser - Biedermeier period in the image.
