General description by the museum (© - Belvedere - Belvedere)
In his delicate coloring as well as his moving composition, this posthumous portrait depicting Emperor Matthias different from Emperor Ferdinand I, like his counterpart, (Inv 4271) from the rest of portraiture of the time. The fact that here two emperors of the House of Habsburg long time were shown after her death in such a large format, suggests that they were intended to equip a representative space. Elfriede Tree suspected an origin from the ancestral hall of the Vienna Hofburg, but this could not be verified so far. Ferdinand I, however, shown here with unusual attributes: He touched on the table in front of him two uncut stones. Matthias, however, has coins and die in front of him. Based on the fact that the paintings are demonstrated in 1904 by a photograph in the Yellow Salon of the former Winter Palace of Prince Eugene in Vienna Himmelpfortgasse, however yet another opportunity arises. there as the authority for mining and coinage was placed under Maria Theresa, it may be in the two paintings of the 1750's trading year also commissioned works during the renovation work. This would in any case with the presented objects on the tables correlate (kindly note from Mag. Philipp Reichel MA).
