Original artwork description from the museum (© - by Petit Palais - Musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris - www.petitpalais.paris.fr)
This huge canvas is inspired by the Gospel according to St. Matthew. A crowd of people, rulers and beggars, young and old, men and women, to press on the steep slopes of an arid and mountainous landscape. Personifying suffering humanity, they head to the figure of Christ the Redeemer with his haloed cross a halo of light. Their clothes evoke the Middle East, the cradle of Christianity.
Catholic family tradition and temperament anxious, Gustave Doré sought appeasement in the Christian faith. His fascination for Christ bursts in the paintings of the Golden Gallery. It consists of twenty large canvases commissioned from the artist in 1867, following the huge success of his illustrated Bible. Like Manet, born and died the same year as him, Doré was panned by critics who neither understands the uniqueness of his visionary realism or the visual intelligence of his productions. It was in London, thanks to the opening of the Doré Gallery in 1869 to 1892, then the United States, this work is a more favorable hearing. During twenty-four years of existence, the Golden Gallery and twenty paintings received about two and a half million visitors. In 1892, most of the paintings were sent to the US to be featured in a traveling exhibition until 1898. Then oblivion falls on them. They are found in 1947 in a Manhattan warehouse, auctioned and dispersed.
