General description by Musée Carnavalet Paris website (© - by Musée Carnavalet Paris - Musée Carnavalet Paris)
Martyrdom of St. John the Evangelist at the Latin gate. Religious scene. In the foreground, a man hoisted evangelist with a pulley in the vat of boiling oil. Above the scene, two angels hold the palm of martyrdom.
The final work was to adorn the high altar of the chapel of the Community of Painters and Sculptors, at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. It was rediscovered in the church of St. Nicolas du Chardonnet. Legend has it that Emperor Domitian brought St. John in Rome. As the latter refused to sacrifice to the gods, he made her head shaved and sentenced him to be plunged into a cauldron of boiling oil, punishment meted out to counterfeiters before a city gate named Latin door. Miraculously, John unscathed from the ordeal. The traditional iconography generally the saint immersed in the tank. But in the seventeenth century a theme variation we observe where the evangelist is hoisted with a pulley. It is the party adopted by Rubens in the triptych of St. John of Mechelen and by Hallé for May of Notre Dame in 1662.
