A fire started in a Paris street at night. At right, a worker in a blue smock accompanied by a guide firefighters officer to the scene of the accident while a couple of bourgeois pass, indifferent. Left, a woman of the people holding a young child in her arms seems to interpellate firefighters running through the crowd with their fire pump. In the foreground of the composition, a worker has fallen to the ground and appears sketch a hand gesture of protection.
This unique urban scene by Gustave Courbet was painted between 1850 and 1851 in the barracks of Poissy. For the sake of realism, the artist would have asked firefighters to perform a sham starting at torchlight. During the coup of December 2, 1851, the uprising in the barracks of Poissy ended the project after a year of work. This ambitious work, but unfinished complex was found rolled up in the studio to the death of the painter.
