General description by Maison de Balzac Paris (© Copyright - Maison de Balzac Paris - Maison de Balzac Paris)
Spent in the workshop Rioult between 1829 and 1830 Gautier hesitate in his youth between painting and writing. In May 1831 Gautier painted a painting of a young girl, simply dressed in a translucent fabric knotted around his hips, his head downcast eyes, crowned with daisies. In his right hand she holds a bouquet of flowers, among which lies a lizard, possible allegory of Innocence. In his catalog of "The Work painted, drawn and engraved" Gautier (1877), Bergerat reports an "Innocence" dated 1827 that Gautier would have offered the bookseller Lucile Damarin. His description, however differ on one point: "She walks on a path lined with flowers and wild herbs, and her feet runs a symbolic snake". Table of the House of Balzac presents a girl in mid-legs and the fabric does not seem to have been cut off at the knees. Is it the same work? Was it a favorite subject for Gautier? Like other early works of Gautier, the table presents certain awkwardness in the proportions, especially in the rendering of the neck and shoulders, particularly the bust.
